The Misfortune of the Sunekosuri is the sixth episode of the 2018 GeGeGe no Kitarō anime.

Synopsis[]

Clip, clop. Kitarō arrives at a village deep within the mountains where an old woman named Masae is living alone. The one who called Kitarō was Masae's only son, Shō, who lives in Tokyo. Shō says that Masae is being haunted by a yōkai, but she will not listen to a single word from the son who left the house without permission. However, Masae is getting weaker. If this continues, she will lose her life. Can Kitarō get rid of the yōkai that is haunting Masae...?

A beast roars as an old man dies

A man named Uchimura is at home screaming in pain as he puts his hand through the shōji and dying, where his body shrivels after a cat enters the house. After this, the cat immediately turns into a huge beast and lets out a roar.

Sometime later, the same cat, named Shiro, is living in the home of an elder woman named Masae, as her pet and only companion. After refusing to eat the fish she offers, Masae wonders where Shiro gets his food. Masae's son Shō, arrives and is scolded for never calling her and for going off to live in Tokyo. After being told to offer incense to his dead father, Shō finds Shiro under the table who Masae calls him as her only family left. After Shō assumes his mother is getting sick because of the "filthy cat", Masae kicks him out and closes the door, telling him to go back to Tokyo.

On the way, he comes across a neighbor who asks how he's been, which the young man replies that he has been doing odd-end jobs like working at a convenience store. The lady tells him about Masae being depressed after his departure and how the village's population has been decreasing. She also mentions Uchimura's recent death, where they found his body looking like a mummy. Shō finds Shiro staring at him and runs away when the cat transforms into a huge beast. Shō sends a letter through the Yōkai Post, asking for help to get rid of a Yōkai, which Nezumi-Otoko finds and shows Kitarō. At a bus stop, Shō meets the two and is frightened by Medama-Oyaji. After Nezumi-Otoko tries to remind him of the cost, Kitarō asks the young man to go with them. However, Shō tells him he will be waiting in an inn in the next village and meet with him after he gets rid of the yōkai. At Masae's house, the old woman continues to cough when Shiro arrives and cuddles on her, Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko watch the cat through the bushes. Nezumi-Otoko complains about cats until Shiro suddenly faces him.

The cat chases after the rat Hanyō until he is stopped by Kitarō's getas at a small stream. At first, Shiro ignores Kitarō but transforms in anger when the Yōkai boy threatens to separate him and Masae. After a brief fight, Kitarō realizes that Shiro is not aware of his true nature and Medama-Oyaji reveals to the cat that he is a yōkai that drains people's energy, a Sunekosuri. This makes Shiro notice how in the past he feels better after touching people as they pass, and remembers that Uchimura dying shortly after he rubbed his leg. Shiro refuses to accept that he is making Masae ill and runs back home. The old woman welcomes him back but quickly falls to her knees coughing, making Shiro realize that he is the cause, and runs into the mountains.

As it rains in the forest Shiro sees mother bird return to her chick and sadly walks away. Kitarō finds Masae's house empty and informs Shō about her disappearance. They look for her in the mountains as Masae searches for Shiro. Medama-Oyaji speculates that Shiro is responsible for the village's low population after slowly draining the energy of several residents. After Masae mistakes a bear for Shiro, her screams are heard by Shiro, Kitarō, and Shō, who run to help her. Shiro arrives first and transforms to attacks the bear, forcing it away, but ends up with a wound on his shoulder. Masae recognizes Shiro in his monstrous form and embraces him, but continues to cough. Kitarō and Shō arrive, where the latter runs to protect his mother with an umbrella. Realizing how harmful he is to Masae, Shiro grows even larger and tells Masae that he is a Yōkai and that he has been deceiving her, but the old woman still insists that she loves him, making him have to threaten to devour her. Shō hits Shiro with the umbrella, making him pretend to be hurt and flee into the forest. After returning to his normal size, Shiro walks through the forest and remembers how Masae found him and the time they spent together, making him cry.

The following day, Shō and Masae, now having mended their relationship, thank Kitarō for his help. Masae cries to herself, thanking Shiro. The sound of a bell is heard, and Kitarō stops and stares off to the mountains, before walking away.
