Frankenstein (フランケンシュタイン), often shortened to Franken (フランケン), is a member of the Western Yōkai. He first appears in the Shonen Magazine story The Great Yōkai War.

Frankenstein first appears in The Great Yōkai War in the manga and Yōkai Rally in the first anime. Like the Wolfman and the Witch he often appears in stories featuring the Western Yōkai, but just like Wolfman he rarely appears outside of these stories. In the anime adaptations, he is usually depicted as being strong but slow-witted.
In the film GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Dai-Sensō he has a terrible fear of bugs, while in the film GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Tokkyū! Maboroshi no Kisha he has a great love of milk.
In Gegege no Kitarō: Yōkai Sen-Monogatari he has the ability to increase his body strength to match any opponent. After witnessing the destructive power of his strength, Kitarō commented that "he's not a yōkai, he's a monster". Despite his strength, he is still not very bright and turns to stone after looking into Gorgon's eyes.

Fifth Anime[]
In the fifth anime, he first appears in episode #32 and is the only one of the Western Yōkai to have fought in the original Great Yōkai War 12 years prior. He develops a fierce rivalry with Konaki-Jijii. He later reunites with Dracula II, the Original Wolfman and the Original Witch and launches an all-out attack on Jigoku, where he blocks the way of the Kitarō Family.
Shōsetsu Gegege no Kitarō ~Ao no Koku~[]
In the Ao no Koku novel, Frankenstein was mentioned as a minion of Backbeard and one of the participants in the original Great Yōkai War on Kikaiga Island.
Legend[]
Frankenstein is based on the monster from Mary Shelly's novel of the same name and his appearance is modeled after Boris Karloff's portrayal of the character from the 1931 film adaptation.
